In a recent interview in Canada, Zac Brown was asked to give his thoughts on today’s country music in the wake of Tom Petty's calling the format “bad rock with a fiddle.” Zac said, “I haven’t heard [Tom Petty’s] comments, but I have some of my own… To me, country music’s always been the home of songs, for great songs, and if I hear one more tailgate in the moonlight, Daisy Duke song, I want to throw up. There’s songs on the radio right now that make me be ashamed to be in the same format.”
He continued, “There are still great artists that are in the country format… I love Luke Bryan and he’s had some great songs, but this new song is the worst songs I’ve ever heard. I know Luke. He’s a friend. [But] ‘That’s My Kinda Night’ is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard, and I see it being commercially successful within what is called country music these days, but I also feel like people deserve something better than that.”
“Good music makes you feel something… I’m opinionated because I care so much about the music in the songs.”
Zac later elaborated over Twitter, "My opinion is not about Luke as an artist, it's about that song. He didn't write it. I'm a fan of Luke, but definitely not that song."
