Here are some scary statistics about sugar in the US.
-- Americans consume about 130 pounds of sugar every year. Back in 1822 Americans consumed the amount of sugar in a can of soda every 5 days. Now we consume the amount of sugar found in 17 cans of soda every 5 days.
-- We consume three pounds of sugar each week and that's about 3,550 pounds during our entire lifetime - enough sugar to fill an industrial sized dumpster.
-- The American Heart Association suggests that we consume no more than 9.5 teaspoons of sugar a day. But the average American consumes 22 teaspoons a day. And that's just adults - children consume 32 teaspoons a day.
Where are we getting all this sugar?
Sodas, candy, cakes, cookies, pies, fruit drinks, dairy and grains. And guess what? Sugar is just as addictive as cocaine - so it's gonna be a hard habit to break.
