Twins born 24 days apart

by Nikki Montgomery

An easy way to explain twins to children is to say that they share the same birthday. In this case that explanation won't work.

Lindalva DaSilva's water broke at 24 weeks. She rushed to the hospital where she delivered Alexandre who was born at 1 pound 10 ounces, but after she delivered Alexandre her contractions faded and the doctor decided to leave Alexandre's twin brother inside mom's womb.

At 24 weeks doctors give babies a 50/50 shot. The best place for a baby to grow is inside mom and the twins were fraternal and did not share a placenta it was determined that it was safe to leave the 2nd baby inside as long there was no sign of infection.

24 days later baby Ronaldo was born at 3 pounds 3 ounces. Both boys are healthy and weigh in at over 6 pounds now and DaSilva and her husband will be able to take the boys home June 18th.

Delayed twin births are extremely rare. The risk of infection is huge so it's more likely that if you go into early labor with one twin the doctor will deliver the other as a precaution.
