Skimp vs. Splurge

by Nikki Montgomery

When it comes to beauty products there are a lot of choices. Over the years I've experimented with a lot of products and my makeup bag is a crazy hodge podge of different things, but out of all of them I have my favorites. I'm going to offer my personal tips on what to skimp on and what to splurge on and hopefully this will save some of you money and might help others find an all day look that works.

  1. SKIMP: Physicians Formula BB All-in-1 Beauty Balm. It contains SPF 30, primer, moisturizer, foundation, evens skin tone, filler and brightener. It is everything to give you a smooth beautiful face in one bottle and it's only $14.99!
  2. SKIMP: Mary Kay eye primer goes on nice and smooth and it keeps your eye shadow in place all day with out creasing. $12
  3. SPLURGE: Clinique under eye concealer All About Eyes. It covers those dark circles better than any other concealer I've tried. $16.50
  4. SKIMP: Mary Kay bronzing powder. I prefer the bronzing beads they used to have, but the mineral bronzing powder does the job. Contouring is a step that so many people skip, but it can make a huge difference in your look. Apply bronzing powder to your temples, along the sides of your nose and especially under your cheek bones. Mary Kay Mineral Bronzing Powder comes in a variety of shades for only $12.
  5. SKIMP: Your blush is an important step, but the brand doesn't really matter as long as the color is suitable for you. That's why I like Maybelline Fit Me blush because the same one looks different on each person so you know it's the perfect color for you and it's available at any drug store for only $2.49-$4.99.
  6. SPLURGE: Too Faced brow envy kit, it's great because it includes a shaping guide. $35
  7. SKIMP: Covergirl Queen collection Vivid Impact eyeliner. It glides on smooth in a variety of great colors and includes a smudger so you can get the perfect smokey look. $7.50
  8. SPLURGE: Urban Decay eye shadow for more subtle or smokey looks go with the Naked Palette for $50. If you're like me and like to use fun colors too you might prefer the Urban Decay Delux Eyeshadow box including 9 great highly pigmented colors for $38. I love Urban Decay because it is highly pigmented so you don't have to put on layer after layer to achieve the look you're going for.
  9. SPLURGE: To set your look you need a loose powder. I love the Bare Minerals Mineral Veil finishing powder. It is a translucent powder that minimizes pores, lines and shine for $20.
  10. SKIMP: Save yourself some money and go with the mascara that has stood the test of time. Maybelline Great Lash mascara has been on the market for over 4 decades and they've never changed their formula. This is a drug store steal that even the biggest celebrity make up artists use. You can't beat the price...$5!
  11. SPLURGE: Lip liner is a must even if you don't want to splurge on it you should use it to keep your lipstick from feathering. When your lipstick feathers it makes you look older. I like Too Faced Perfect Lips Liner because it glides on smooth and it keeps your lipstick in check and lasts all day. The price tag is a little higher than your typical drug store brand though so I'll leave it up to you. Too Faced Perfect Lips Liner $17.
  12. SPLURGE: Stila Balm Lipstick is great because it acts like a balm, but wears like a lipstick. I hate it when lipsticks dry out my lips which is why I avoid long-wear. Stila Balm Lipstick $22.
  13. SKIMP: Lip gloss is one of those things that wears off so quickly that it doesn't matter what brand you buy, just don't use anything sticky. I like Ulta brand Super Shiny for $8. Tip: Get a color that closely matches your lipstick and you may be able to get away with only reapplying the gloss throughout the day.
