LEXINGTON, KY. (KWSN)- The American Volleyball Coaches Association has honored the University of Sioux Falls’ volleyball team with the AVCA Team Academic Award, highlighting the Cougars’ accomplishments in the classroom during the 2012-13 academic year.

The award, which was initiated in 1992-93, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

USF was one of 77 NCAA-DII programs and one of seven Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference squads to receive the honor. Concordia-St. Paul. Minnesota State University, Mankato; MSU-Moorhead, Southwest Minnesota State, Upper Iowa, Wayne State College and Winona State also represented the NSIC.

It's the fifth straight year that USF has received the honor. The 2008-09 USF squad earned the program's first-ever AVCA team academic award.

"Excellence doesn't happen by accident, either on the court or in the classroom," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "It takes consistent preparation, relentless effort, and determined leadership. A full year of academic achievement, by an entire team of individual students, is a remarkable achievement.  What better way to start a new season than with a celebration of an award so emblematic of all that is necessary for sustained success."

The Cougars achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.54 and were led in the classroom by Emily Johnson, who maintained a 3.95 grade point average through 2012-13.

The squad also included junior Samantha Lovell (3.77) and recent graduate Kelsey Krcil (3.75).

USF previously saw all eight of its potential candidates be named to the NSIC Fall 2012 All-Academic Team for volleyball.

The Cougars begin their 2013 campaign on Friday, Sept. 6 at Nova Southeastern University (Fla.) in the Shark Classic.
