VERMILLION, S.D. (KWSN)– Both South Dakota men’s and women’s cross country teams finished second in the Summit League Preseason Coach’s Poll released Wednesday with each USD team picking up one first-place vote.
The men’s team, which returns all-league runners Jeff Mettler and Mubarik Musa, had 20 points and finished behind defending champion South Dakota State, which tallied 25 points and five first-place votes. IUPUI (17), Western Illinois (12), North Dakota State (11) and Fort Wayne (5) rounded out the poll.
The women received 30 points and will return three all-league runners in Megan Hilson, Katie Wetzstein and Amber Eickhorn, who was last season’s League Newcomer of the Championship. The North Dakota State women were chosen to repeat as champions with 35 points and six first-place votes. SDSU (27) finished third in the poll, Omaha (16) was fourth, IUPUI and Western Illinois (13) tied for fifth, and Fort Wayne (12) placed seventh.
South Dakota’s cross country teams will start the season at the Bison Open on Aug. 30 in Fargo, N.D.
