PIERRE, S.D. (KELO-AM) – Gov. Dennis Daugaard is encouraging South Dakotans to consider registering as an organ, eye and tissue donor this holiday season.
HB1217, a bill authored by the Governor and passed by the Legislature last session, establishes a new online donor registry which is managed by the Department of Public Safety.
“Christmas is a time for giving, and there’s no greater gift than the gift of life,” said the Governor. “Now that we’ve provided a more convenient way to register as an organ donor, it is my hope that more South Dakotans will find it in their hearts to register this holiday season.”
More than 56 percent of South Dakotans are currently registered as donors. According to LifeSource, a nonprofit that manages organ and tissue donation, every donor has the potential to save up to 60 lives.
“The number of people in need of an organ greatly exceeds the number of organs available,” said the Governor. “With the amount of need out there, it’s important to remind people that regardless of your age or background, you can register to be a donor.”
