SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The Minnehaha County Commission's position on expanding Medicaid in South Dakota is that it has no position. Commissioners on Tuesday morning handed down a split two-two vote on a motion to not endorse expanding Medicaid. Director of Minnehaha County Human Services, Carol Muller, briefed the Commission before seeking an endorsement to expand Medicaid. Muller says there are people who truly want access to Medicaid, but when you're making $7.25 to $9 an hour, it's very difficult to afford health insurance.
The South Dakota Association of County Commissions has decided to remain neutral on expanding Medicaid. Commissioners John Pekas and Dick Kelly voted for the motion to not endorse, while Commissioners Cindy Heiberger and Jeff Barth voted against the motion. Commissioner Gerald Beninga was not present.
