Heart Association promotes hands-only CPR


SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) -  Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in the United States with nearly 360-thousand out-of-hospital cases every year.

     American Heart Association spokewoman Chrissy Meyer says survival depends on the victim receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation from someone nearby

     Meyer says the Association is encouraging hands-only C-P-R that’s been shown to be just as effective as conventional mouth-to-mouth C-P-R.  Meyer says to think about the song "Stayin Alive" buy the Bee Gees" which is exactly 100 beats per minute.  She says as you're doing chest compressions, that's roughly that 100 beats.  She say you continue the compressions until help arrives. 

     Meyer says people are more likely to feel comfortable performing hands-only C-P-R.
