SDSU - South Dakota State University faculty members have been awarded competitive state research grants through the South Dakota Board of Regents. “Since their inception in 2005, these grants have helped individual faculty members and their departments build a more sustainable research program,” said Paul Turman, the regents’ vice president of research and economic development. “Long term, the goal is to strengthen South Dakota’s research competitiveness and generate more commercial activity derived from research,” he said. Thirty-seven grant proposals were submitted; seven South Dakota public university faculty members’ grant proposals were funded for a total of $431,503.For the first time this year, the pool of funds available was split into two different award levels to give more faculty members an opportunity to compete for funding. Five of the seven research projects are newly funded. Two of the grant awards, to South Dakota School of Mines & Technology researcher Adam French and South Dakota State University researcher Cheng Zhang, fund a second year of their research projects.The research grants allow universities to acquire equipment, hire staff, pay faculty, and support undergraduate and graduate students.These are the SDSU faculty members who received a 2013 Competitive Research Grant, their department, research topic and grant amount awarded:

  • Gregory Michna, Mechanical Engineering – Toward realization of pulsating heat pipe electronics cooling system; $99,118 
  • Cheng Zhang, Chemistry/Biochemistry – Year 2 Continuation Proposal: Development of a common strategy to address fundamental problems in organic electro-optic, photovoltaic and electronic thin film devices; $99,569
