LAREDO, TX (KWSN) - The Laredo Lemurs handed the Sioux Falls Canaries a 5-3 loss on Wednesday night at Uni-Trade Stadium to complete a three-game series sweep.
The Canaries (12-21) have gone winless in six attempts thus far on their 10-game Texas road swing.
Laredo (21-12) broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run rally in the seventh inning. Harrison Kain led off with a double against Canaries starter Kyle Ruwe (3-4), and he scored moments later on Garrett Rau's single up the middle. Jimmy Mojica followed with an RBI single, and Sawyer Carroll capped the rally with a run-scoring base hit. Mojica was a terror at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two solo home runs, three runs scored and three RBI.
Ruwe suffered his second straight loss. He held Laredo to two runs and seven hits through the first six innings before the fateful seventh. He did not walk anybody and struck out one.
The Canaries twice tied the game with run-scoring doubles, one from J.P. Ramirez in the fourth inning and one by Nick Van Stratten in the seventh. But the Canaries managed just six hits total, and Ramirez and Cory Morales each had two.
Former major-league pitcher Fernando Hernandez started for Laredo and held the Birds to one run on two hits through six innings, but he did not factor in the decision. Despite giving up the game-tying run, reliever Mark Haynes (3-0) earned the victory.
Tim Pahuta hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, his ninth of the year, to cut the lead to 5-3, but that was as close as the Canaries could get.
Mike Benacka pitched a clean ninth inning for his sixth save and second in as many days. The Canaries begin a four-game series against the El Paso Diablos at 8:05 p.m. CDT on Thursday, June 20 in El Paso.
The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM, 98.1-FM KWSN and kwsn.com.
