Texting while driving citations

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls Police issued eleven citations for texting while driving since the city council implemented the ban last year.

Officer Sam Clemens says compliance was better last fall because of the publicity surrounding passage of the ordinance.

Clemens says two, text-while-driving tickets, issued in January and February, were issued to drivers involved in crashes.  He says the goal is to get drivers to put down hand-held devices and pay attention to the road.  He says some drivers may have fallen back into old habits.  But if officers notice anything they will handle it like any other violation.

Clemens says the ordinance prohibits anyone from using a hand-held device to access the Internet.  It doesn't prohibit cell phone calls.

A texting-while-driving ticket carries a $95 dollar ticket.  If you challenge the ticket and lose, the judge can increase your fine up to $200.
