SIOUX FALLS, SD (KWSN) – Augustana football held its annual spring game at Kirkeby-Over Stadium on Saturday morning.
This year’s format was a little different than year’s past due to injuries. The team went through a routine practice before a 25 minute live session at the conclusion of the practice. In the first possession for the first team offense, Justin Heinrich found Justin Greenway in the flat for a 20 yard gain on a third and five situation. Two plays later Greenway caught a screen pass for another first down to get the Viking offense to midfield.
The Viking defense put the offense in a third and 17 situation when the defensive line got pressure up the middle for a potential sack before Thomas Vanasek came off the edge to take Greenway down in the backfield, ending the drive.
Trey Heid took over the snaps in the offenses’ second possession and led the squad to consecutive first downs, the second on an 11-yard scurry to move the sticks. Two plays later the Viking defense put the offense in another third and long situation with Joel Slinden getting through the line with a sack.
The session ended with a field goal kicking competition between an offensive and defensive lineman. Augustana will open the regular season on at home on Sept. 7, hosting MSU Moorhead.
