SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard has proclaimed May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
The proclamation says South Dakota is one of the safest states for riding motorcycles in America.
Sioux Falls Police Lieutenant Jerry Miller says even though South Dakota doesn’t mandate wearing a motorcycle helmet it’s a good idea to wear one. He says a helmet is the difference between life or death in a motorcycle crash. He says you don't have a lot of protection anyway so give yourself every chance to survive.
Miller says other safety tips include using turn signals for every turn or lane change, wear brightly colored protective gear and put yourself in the lane where you are most visible to other drivers.
