SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Minnehaha County has already seen one influenza-related fatality.
Health providers are encouraging everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
Medical Director with Falls Community Health, Doctor C.W. Shafer says you can’t get influenza from a shot. But he says you can get a mild case from the nasal spray application because that's a live virus. He says docotors would never administer nasal vaccine to someone who is at high risk of complications.
Shafer identifies young children, the elderly, pregnant women and those who suffer from chronic illness as most at risk to serious complications from influenza.
Shafer advises contacting your family doctor, take advantage of vaccination events around town or go to Falls Community Health in downtown Sioux Falls.
