State Unemployment Rate Holds Steady at 3.7 Percent



PIERRE, S.D. (KELO-AM) – South Dakota workforce estimates for September and October are now available after data collection processes were resumed following the federal government shutdown. 

South Dakota’s unemployment rate remained at 3.7 percent from September to October. The number of South Dakotans in the labor force also remained unchanged at 449,400 over the month, with employment increasing slightly by 100 (0.0 percent).

 The October 2013 labor force level of 449,400 was up compared to the October 2012 level of 446,100. The level of employed increased by 6,100 (1.4 percent) over the year; the level of unemployed decreased by 2,800 persons (14.4 percent).

 Over the year, the seasonally adjusted nonfarm worker level increased by 4,500 workers (1.1 percent). The largest number of jobs were added within the trade, transportation and utilities (1,300 workers or 1.6 percent), leisure and hospitality (1,200 workers or 2.7 percent) and educational and health services (1,000 workers or 1.5 percent) industry sectors.
