Sioux Falls S.D. (KELO AM) - Tracy Turbak, City Finance Director, today provided the Sioux Falls City Council with an update on the costs incurred for Operation Timber Strike! and the associated FEMA and State funding to reimburse a portion of those costs. Turbak reported that the costs of Operation Timber Strike! will soon be finalized as the last few remaining invoices are received and paid. The final cost of the operation is expected to total about $8.3 million—less than the $9.0 million estimated earlier this year.
Turbak also reported that many of the costs incurred on Operation Timber Strike! are eligible for partial reimbursement from FEMA and the State of South Dakota. Through September, the City had received approximately $6.0 million as reimbursement of eligible costs. Further reimbursement requests, yet to be processed, are expected to add to that amount. Turbak stated, “The FEMA and State reimbursements have met my expectations, and I believe the City of Sioux Falls has been treated very fairly by FEMA and the State of South Dakota in the financial response to this disaster.”
Turbak indicated that when all costs and reimbursements have been processed, the net impact to the bottom line of the City’s General Fund will be about $1.1 million—which will be funded by using reserves. Turbak went on to say, “Meeting the financial demands that occur as a result of unexpected events such as this spring ice storm underscore why it is so vital for the City to maintain a strong financial position.”
