City Drainageway Branch Clearing Is Under Way

Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) - The City of Sioux Falls has begun tree and branch clearing operations on multiple City-owned drainage properties. The drainageways were initially cleared of hazards following the April 2013 ice storm. The material was gathered on high ground and designated for future removal. All remaining dead or damaged trees will be taken down and the remaining debris piles will be removed as part of this project.

“Our initial clearing of the waterways following the April storm allowed our storm water system to function properly,” says Andy Berg, Principal Drainage Engineer. “Now we are going back into those channels and removing the piles of debris as well as removing any dead or damaged trees from the waterways.”

More than 150 drainage areas across Sioux Falls will be cleared as part of this cleanup operation. The City’s Street Maintenance Division has been working to clear the areas with easier access. A City-hired contractor, T.F.R. Enterprises, Inc., now is clearing the sites with the most debris. Residents living adjacent to these contractor-cleared City drainage areas will be notified prior to work beginning in their neighborhoods. The work is scheduled to be complete by the end of November.

Stump grinding in the public right-of-way and parks also continues and will be complete by the end of October. For more information, call Public Works at 367-8600.
