Citizen Boards provide opportunities for residents to serve their community

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM The City of Sioux Falls has established a variety of boards and commissions that provide citizens with opportunities to use their talents to benefit our community. Several of these boards currently have vacancies, and all residents are encouraged to apply.

More than 40 boards and commissions advise the Mayor and City Council on a variety of topics. Some examples include the Airport Authority Board, the Parks and Recreation Board, the Planning Commission, the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau BID Board, the Public Transit Advisory Board, and many more. Service on a board or commission allows residents to provide important input on policies that shape local government and the city.

“The goal of these boards is to ensure that the public is engaged with their government and have opportunities to provide guidance regarding what they want their city to look like,” says Mayor Mike Huether. “We want as many people as possible to have a chance to participate in these boards and offer their advice to elected officials.”

Most appointments are made by the Mayor with the consent and approval of the City Council. Appointments are determined based on applicants’ relevant education, experience, reason for applying, and other factors. After a term has been served, reappointments may occur, but new applicants will be considered in order to provide opportunities to others who wish to serve.

You may apply to a board or commission by going to www.siouxfalls.org/boards-commissions and clicking on the Apply Now link. You may also download a PDF version of the application and mail it in or drop it off in the Mayor’s Office.

Applications are kept on file for three years and will be considered every time there is an opening on the board or commission you chose on your application.

For more information, contact Julie Wilson in the Mayor’s Office at 367-8827.
