BURNSVILLE, MINN. (KWSN) – University of Sioux Falls ace Derek Fischer was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week the conference office announced from Burnsville, Minn., Tuesday morning. The senior right-hander notched a quality start in the Cougars’ 4-3 season-opening victory against Colorado State University-Pueblo, making it three years straight that USF has won on Opening Day.
The former Brandon Valley standout allowed three runs (none earned) on four hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts in six innings of work. Of the 96 pitches Fischer tossed, 59 were strikes and he dealt first pitch strikes to 12 of the 27 Thunder Wolves he faced. He also induced eight ground outs to six fly balls for a 1.33 GO/AO ratio.
It is the second NSIC Pitcher of the Week certificate for Fischer, who entered his senior campaign poised to move up in several statistical categories in the Cougar baseball program's record book. Fischer already ranks third all-time at USF in career strikeouts (144), fifth in wins (14) and earned run average (4.05) and seventh in innings pitched (162.1).
USF (1-2) travels to St. Louis (Mo.) this weekend for a four-game series with Maryville University (2-1).
