SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The newly formed Department of Veterans Affairs has an ambitious goal: contact every veteran living in South Dakota.
Secretary Larry Zimmerman says “Operation Reach All Veterans” should take a year. He says there may be Vietnam veterans that have heart conditions or cancer that agent orange had caused and they may not know that. He says that's what the Department is doing, letting eveybody know what's available.
Zimmerman estimates there are 75,000 veterans in South Dakota.
He says they and their family may not be aware of the benefits and services that are due them.
Zimmerman says he personally will call ten veterans a week this year.
