Thirty brave mushers and 420 sled dogs will be seen on trails in Northern Minnesota Sunday, for the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. Beargrease is the longest sled dog race in the country, not counting Alaska.
Heo Theobald, Associate Director of White Wilderness Sled Dog Adventures, says it is a very rugged race. “It is the longest sled dog race in the lower 48, it’s also known for being the hilliest one.”
Theobald says that most people don’t realize how hilly the race is until the first time they run it, and that the key to winning Beargreese is taking good care of your dogs. She says you should have at least a thousand miles of experience on your dogs before attempting a race like this one.
Theobald works for Peter McClelland, a very experienced musher who will be in the race on Sunday.
