Washington, DC (KELO AM) – U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) today announced the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has awarded a $294,665 federal grant to the South Dakota Department of Tourism and State Development. This grant money will be used to fund the South Dakota Digital Newspaper Program.
“This grant will provide funding for the South Dakota Digital Newspaper Project as part of a larger, national newspaper archiving project,” Johnson said. “The South Dakota Digital Newspaper Project will preserve thousands of articles from newspapers dating back to the mid-1800s and will help to preserve and promote our state’s rich history.”
NEH funds will be used to digitize 100,000 pages of historic South Dakota newspapers published between 1836 and 1922 as part of the state’s participation in the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). The grant will be administered by Chelle Somsen, the South Dakota State Archivist.
