South Dakota part of massive effort to cut fatal crashes

by

Pierre, SD (KELO-AM) South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is joining law enforcement agencies from 14 other states in a four-day, coast-to-coast, high-visibility enforcement campaign focused on Interstates 90 and 94 beginning Friday.

State and local law enforcement agencies participating in the “I-90/94 Challenge’’ have a goal of zero fatalities on the two interstates between Washington state and New York state between Aug. 1-4. The challenge covers more than 5,600 miles of highway.

“It’s a big, important challenge, and it’s a real opportunity for our troopers to lead a multi-agency effort to make the interstate safer for the traveling public, ‘’ says Col. Craig Price, superintendent of the South Dakota Highway Patrol. “We believe a combination of aggressive enforcement and high-visibility patrols will raise public awareness of the need for safe, smart behavior on our highways.’’

Price says law enforcement personnel from many counties and cities along I-90 in South Dakota are participating in the challenge alongside state troopers. The Minnesota State Patrol is coordinating the national effort and will gather statistics from participating states on the effectiveness of the operation.

South Dakota Highway Patrol Major Dana Svendsen says they will be focusing on speeders, distracted drivers and impaired drivers. He says motorists will definitely notice more troopers on I-90.
