Governor’s Daycare Facility Awarded In Doland

PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Dennis Daugaard announced today that Doland Community Daycare has been granted a Governor’s Daycare Facility.

“There’s a real need for daycare in Doland,” said Gov. Daugaard. “Right now there are no permanent daycare facilities or in-home daycares in the community. Families have to spend extra time and money driving to another town for quality daycare.”

After conducting a local assessment and holding public meetings, community leaders determined that there was no appropriate facility in Doland to start a daycare and that building a new facility would be cost prohibitive. Local leaders then applied for the Governor’s Daycare Facility grant.

“The town cannot hope to attract people to live and work in the community without creating a daycare facility,” said Amy Hofer, who headed the efforts.

The 1,200-square-foot, six-room facilities are built by inmates in the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield. The first Governor’s Daycare Facility was awarded in 1997 and 38 communities have benefited from the program.
