SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – State Troopers from South Dakota and Minnesota made 385 arrests and issued 1,004 warnings during a joint enforcement operation Thursday, June, 12, on Interstate 90 between the Wyoming and Minnesota borders.

As the summer driving season gears up, the joint operation focused on criminal interdiction, speeding, seatbelt use and drinking and driving. This is the third consecutive year South Dakota and Minnesota have joined together for the enforcement effort.

“At the beginning of the summer when people begin to travel, our joint effort with Minnesota raises public awareness for motorists’ need to make safe choices on the road,” Capt. Alan Welsh of the South Dakota Highway Patrol said.

A total of 963 vehicles were stopped. There were six DUI arrests. The troopers provided 57 physical aids which is three physical aids to motorists per hour of the operation.

Additionally, Motor Carrier Services crews from Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota focused on safety violations for the Interstate trucking industry.  Their enforcement effort translated into 59 arrests and 136 warnings for violations that resulted in several vehicles and drivers being placed out of service until compliance could be reached.

  • Stop sign violations: one arrest, five warnings
  • Move-over law: five arrests, 26 warnings
