SIOUX FALLS, SD (KWSN) –  The Sioux Falls Canaries have signed RHP Chase Boruff to a contract and placed relief pitcher Josh Giles on the disabled list.

Boruff spent three seasons in the Kansas City Royals organization after signing as an undrafted free agent in 2010.  The right-hander compiled a 5-10 record while in the Royals organization, racking up 119 strikeouts in 129 innings pitched.  His best season came in 2011 while with the Royals Midwest League affiliate, the Kane County Cougars.  Boruff finished the 2011 season with a 4-1 record with seven saves and 63 strikeouts in 41 relief appearances.

Boruff, 25, missed all of 2013 after undergoing successful Tommy John Surgery on his right throwing arm.  He last pitched in 2012 for the Royals High-A affiliate in the Carolina League, the Wilmington Blue Rocks.  Boruff finished the 2012 season with a 1-8 record making four starts in 28 appearances.

Josh Giles has been sidelined with several lingering injuries before being placed on the DL.  Prior to his injury, Giles had not allowed an earned run since July 25th of last season.  His stretch of scoreless baseball lasted 19 1/3 innings from July 25th of last season through June 2nd of 2014.  He last worked in back-to-back games against St. Paul on June 9th and 10th, allowing 5 runs in two innings.

The team also announced the signing of catcher Matt Hitt to a contract, he replaces IF Shelby Ford who was placed on the DL

Hitt, 24, was originally signed by the Toronto Blue Jay's as an undrafted free agent in 2013 after spending two collegiate seasons at Eastern Michigan University.

Hitt spent part of the 2013 season playing for Toronto's Low-A affiliate, the Vancouver Canadians, making 37 plate appearances in 14 games.

In two seasons at Eastern Michigan, Hitt appeared in 87 games while posting a .232 batting average with 15 doubles, seven homeruns and 50 RBI.

Shelby Ford was placed on the DL after sustaining a concussion while playing second base in Sioux City.  Ford has been the biggest offensive threat for the Canaries in 2014, posting a .336 batting average with seven doubles, six homeruns and 19 RBI in 30 games.

The Canaries return to Sioux Falls on Friday night opening up a seven-game homestand with a three-game series against their North Division rivals, the St. Paul Saints.  Friday is AARP Night with the Canaries as they battle the St. Paul Saints. The first 3,000 fans will receive a Canaries/AARP koozie, compliments of the South Dakota AARP. A member of AARP will be throwing out the first pitch and the Canaries will be honoring AARP members in the Sioux Falls area.  There will also be fireworks after the game on Friday night presented by Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital, Orthopedic Institute & All-Star Fireworks.
