PIERRE, SD (KELO AM) -- Though snowmobilers continue to experience great snowmobiling conditions in the Black Hills, March 31 marks the official end of the season for the statewide snowmobile trail system.

"It's been a phenomenal season for snowmobiling in the Black Hills," said Shannon Percy, Black Hills Trails District supervisor. "Grooming operations began in full force on the season opener, and staff has been consistently grooming throughout the season."

Grooming operations will continue as long as snow conditions allow until March 31.

Trail conditions were not as ideal in the eastern part of the state for snowmobile enthusiasts.

"Even though we experienced cold temperatures throughout the winter, a majority of the East River trail systems didn't receive the snowfall that we'd like to see for trail grooming," said Tony Schmitt, Trails Program specialist of the Department of Game, Fish and Parks. "The best trail conditions this season were in the Brookings, De Smet and Lake Poinsett areas."

Through a Grant-In-Aid program agreement with the Game, Fish and Parks Department, local snowmobile clubs groomed, signed and maintained over 1,200 miles of trails this season in eastern South Dakota.

For further information on trail conditions, contact the Black Hills Trails Office at 605-584-3896, visitgfp.sd.gov/snowmobiling or follow us on Twitter @SDSnowBHills.

The snowmobile trails program is funded entirely by snowmobile users through license registration fees, fuel tax reimbursement and an excise tax on the sale of snowmobiles in South Dakota.
