Your bacon could go up 25 % this summer. A virus that kills one in ten piglets has run rampant in Iowa and Minnesota. Now South Dakota State Veterinarian Dusty Oedekoven says 25 farms in mainly Southeastern South Dakota have been officially certified with the PEDV (porcine epidemic diarrhea virus). This new strain started last April and caught many by surprise. There is no vaccine and bio control standards are being enforced. Feed and non-sanitized transportation are suspect. Odekoven had been in Sioux Falls talking to pork producers and told KELO;s Jon Michaels that there is a real concern but it is not a threat to humans.
