SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Sen. John Thune said he is doing the necessary preparation for a run at reelection next year.
Some national political publications have speculated Thune may not run for a fourth term in 2022. He has served in the Senate since 2005.
“We’ll get down the road here in late summer, early fall, and obviously take a look at things and see where it goes, but I’m doing everything I need to be doing,” Thune said this week.
Thune said he is raising money and “getting around,” but doesn’t want to go into campaign mode too early.
“I’m going to wait to make any announcement about that until the end of the year,” Thune said, later adding, “I think if you do a good job the politics follows with it.”
Thune said it may be difficult for Republicans to regain control of the Senate next year. The chamber is currently deadlocked at 50-50.
