SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The wind reports from yesterday severe weather were enough to classify the storm as a derecho, according to the National Weather Service. While the storm wasn’t accompanied by the wall of dust like the May storm, it produce damage from straight line winds that reached speeds of 99 mph near Huron and Howard. The Sioux Falls airport saw a top speed of 80 mph.
Thousands remain without power this morning. Xcel Energy reports more than 5300 customers without power, including our studio in downtown Sioux Falls.
In response to yesterday’s storm, the city of Sioux Falls is offering storm debris drop-off sites to assist with cleanup efforts. Wood debris can be dropped off at 100 North Lyon Blvd. from 8 AM until 8 PM, the site will be open through the month of July. Additionally, the city will waive landfill tipping fees this month for people in Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, and Turner Counties dropping off storm-related debris. Wood debris can also be brought to Mueller Pallets of Sioux Falls.
