Last night (2/12) my wife Dakota and I watched a movie called Inland Empire. You’ve either never heard of this movie, or scrolled past it on streaming services. It’s David Lynch’s last movie he made, so this was the note we went out on until he did Season 3 of Twin Peaks. And honestly, I don’t get it. It was a movie. It was art. But it’s a convoluted mess. I was barely able to follow whatever story there was in this film. It’s so confusing, subversive, and fever-dream-like. You know how when you dream and there are events that happen, and they don’t relate to one another, but they’re still kind of connected, that’s how this movie portrays itself. It’s fine. I probably won’t revisit this movie for a while, and I definitely need to do more research on the story itself to see if there IS some other layer I’m just not getting. Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend this movie to people. If you’re a hardcore fan of David Lynch, go for it, otherwise, I’d say skip it. Dakota also watched this for her first time last night, and she said this about the movie: “I think I’ll always be forever confused by this movie. I’m sure someone out there with a love for deep cryptic films love this movie. I have a loose theory about this movie, but it gets blown out of the water in the last 20 minutes of the movie. I’m so unsure of the whole thing, but that’s what the director wants. He wants you to be confused. I wouldn’t recommend this to people, but it is a good movie. It’s very well done. Maybe one day we’ll figure out what is going on in this movie.”
I give this one 3 out of 5 stars only because I am a fan of David Lynch, and I’m happy I watched it
