Last night my wife Dakota and I watched one of the Pinocchio movies released in 2022 – Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. It’s a Netflix original movie, but it had a Bluray release through the Criterion collection. I purchased it over the weekend so we watched the movie, and it’s absolutely phenomenal. The story of Pinocchio is older than anyone currently living on Earth, and is one of the most popular children’s stories of all time. I LOVE Guillermo del Toro’s take on this classic tale, placing it in 1940s Italy. I love how fleshed out all of the characters are throughout this film. With acting credits Gregory Mann as Pinocchio, Ewan McGregor as the Cricket, David Bradley as Gepetto, Tilda Swinton as the Blue Fairy & The Sphynx, Cate Blanchett, Ron Perlman, Finn Wolfhard, and Tom Kenny, this movies cast was done perfectly. And it’s stop-motion animation. There are tactics used throughout this movie that are extremely impressive for a stop-motion movie. It’s beautiful. I cannot express enough how phenomenal this movie comes across. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this for children. If you’re only used to Disney’s version of this movie, this one is way darker. But for tweens, teens, and adults who appreciate animation, or any parent who needs a tear jerker of a movie, this version of Pinocchio will rip your heart out and show it to you multiple times throughout the film. Bring a box of tissues if you’re a parent.
I give this movie 5 out of 5 stars – You can see what I’m currently watching by following me on Letterboxd @ roberthawk
