The 4th of July is such a FUN holiday – family, friends, food & fireworks. While it may be joyous for us, it can be very frightening and even dangerous to our pets.
First and foremost – Independence Day is one of the biggest days for pets to go missing. (especially dogs) The loud sounds of fireworks can frighten them… some will hide – others will flee. Keep them safe and secure in your home. Make sure all doors, gates and fences are closed and secure. This is also a good time to make sure your pets are wearing a collar with contact information on it – and if you haven’t microchipped your dog yet – you might want to check with your vet and see if you can get this done. It’s a very fast and simple process and can help reunite you and your furbaby if they go missing.
If you are going to be home with them, here are a few tips to keep pets more comfortable:
- Head somewhere that’s going to be quieter that night, or move to a room in your house that’s away from windows and exterior walls.
- Drown out the sound of fireworks with calming music or white noise.
- Create a space that’s safe and cozy. This might mean bringing your dog into a room with their favorite dog bed and toys, and giving them some yummy treats.
There also some products you can try to help relieve their anxiety:
- CBD items for calming dogs. Petsmart has a wonderful selection of oils, treats and more HERE
- A calming vest, such as a Thundershirt (available at Petsmart)
- And, if your pet is very anxious, make an appointment with your vet – there some calming medications that might be the solution. Read more about theme HERE
- Finally, please be patient with your pet – the 4th of July can be very stressful for them.
XO,
Ryan
