Last night (7/14) my wife Dakota and I watched the movie Sinners (2025). It rules. Go see it. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, don’t read this review. I genuinely don’t want to spoil anything for you. Just know there’s great music, great acting, a lot of blood, and a lot of language throughout.
Sinners is the latest movie from director Ryan Coogler who previously did the two Black Panther movies and the 2015 Creed movie. Ryan Coogler has already proved he can make a great movie, and this is his best work. A fully original idea fleshed out in greatness. You can definitely tell there’s influence from his previous projects on this movie, but it doesn’t hinder it at all. About two twins who have experienced the world and are opening up their own night club. And the twist is… here it is. Don’t read any further if you haven’t seen it because it truly is best if you go in as blind as possible to the story. Want to know? Already know? Last chance. Okay here it is. In the midst of 1930s Mississippi, they are infiltrated by vampires. Yup. The twins have a night club and they have to fight off vampires. It’s fantastic and so fun. As I type this review it sounds ridiculous, but it’s not. It feels very natural and helps the story advance so far and makes it truly stand out. It’s so cool. And the music is wonderful throughout. If you have a deep appreciation for the history of music and can appreciate the blues and all the music that’s stemmed from it, you’ll really love this soundtrack. The acting is phenomenal with such a great cast. Michael B. Jordan playing TWO roles, supported by Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton (in his film debut) as one of my favorite characters of the movie, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo, this cast is great, they all do a wonderful job, and leave you with lasting impressions. If it wasn’t for Superman, this might be my top movie of 2025. It’s definitely in my top 3 of this year.
I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars – You can see what I’m currently watching by following me on Letterboxd @ roberthawk
