Last night we watched My Neighbor Totoro (1988). I wanted to watch a movie that my entire family could enjoy together, so I put this on, knowing that it’s safe for my 2 year old to watch. I’ve seen My Neighbor Totoro many times growing up, and I’m shocked my wife didn’t. I’m not the biggest fan of the japanese anime style when it comes to tv shows and movies, but my wife loves it! She’s able to find stuff that I really enjoy, but it’s backwards in this situation. I showed my wife this movie, and it’s such a gem of a story. My Neighbor Totoro is a classic film produced through Studio Ghibli – which is essentially the Disney studio of japanese animations – and it’s beautiful. A story about a small family moving into a new house, and the mysterious beings that live in and around the house. No, it’s not haunted, but it’s all beautiful and magical. If you’re a fan of animation of any style, this is beautiful hand drawn animation, and it flows extremely well. Plus the magic of the being that is Totoro, the magic of waiting for the cat bus, and the little creatures surrounding everything are mezmorizing. My son was captivated by it, and was running around the room going, “Totoro! Totoro!” it was so cute. Definitely watch this if you want a family friendly movie that might be a little different than what you’re used to seeing.
I give this movie 4 stars out of 5 – You can see what I’m currently watching by following me on Letterboxd @ roberthawk
