SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — After years of dreaming and months of construction, the Minnehaha County Jail expansion project is essentially complete.
“We’re doing well and we’re moving into the new space and we’re operating out of the new space and so far, so good,” Jail Warden Mike Mattson tells KELO.com News.
Mattson says the expansion means the jail will eventually have nearly double the bed space to handling the ever-growing population in the Sioux Falls area.
He says the biggest thing left is completing the new electronic security system in the old part of the jail so it basically lines up with the new part.
There are a new front desk area and intake space – new and improved.
“The previous intake tended to be pretty chaotic with both admission and releasing all happening in the same area.”
The project cost about $48 million, but came in under budget and ahead of schedule.
