BRIDGEWATER, SD (KELO.com) — Planting season is off to a slow start in South Dakota, but finally, things are beginning to move. Today we’re starting a series of stories that will run through the growing season…following the farm operation of the Hofer family near Bridgewater. Jason Hofer is a 4th generation farmer with the 5th generation in training. The operation is focused on corn and soybeans. The cold weather prevented planting far longer than he wanted…but finally, this week planting has begun…
The snow has been gone for a few weeks in most of the state, but farmers couldn’t begin planting right away. Hofer says soil temperature and dry ground are the primary concerns….
The biggest risk now is a late frost.
