SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Authorities shot and killed a man who charged them during a standoff Thursday morning in the 400 block of North Garfield Avenue.
That’s according to Sioux Falls Police Officer Sam Clemens.
He said at 7:34 a.m. Thursday morning, two adults and a juvenile went to the hospital with stab wounds. The hospital called the police.
About 7:50 a.m., the first officer arrived, followed by a SWAT team and a negotiator at 8:11 a.m. Clemens says it is standard practice to activate both to try to end standoffs safely for all involved.
After about an hour of negotiation with the suspect, police say he charged authorities, and he was fatally wounded.
Clemens says the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation will investigate the officer-involved shooting.
Clemens also said authorities are working through the incident and will provide more information later about the suspect and the victims.
He said at one point, authorities smelled gas and called in the utility companies.
Clemens says he’s not sure when the last officer-involved shooting was in Sioux Falls, but he thought it was “years.”
Sioux Falls Police will issue a news release later today with more details.
