PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — Absenteeism among South Dakota’s Native American students is more than double the state average. A study by South Dakota NewsWatch and the Associated Press shows chronic absenteeism among indigenous students runs at 54-percent. The state average is 21-percent. Officials describe chronic absenteeism as missing at least ten percent of the school days in a year for any reason – even excused absences. They say poverty is a major contributing factor.
