I watched Pee-Wee as Himself (2025) with my wife. The documentary about Paul Reubens as he grew up, who he was as a person, and how he came up with the character of Pee-Wee Herman. It’s absolutely excellent. Within the first 2 minutes I was crying. I cried multiple times while watching this documentary. I love Pee-Wee Herman, and I don’t know who I would be without him. Paul Reubens was a very closed off person to the public, so there wasn’t much about his personal life in the public eye, so this is the first time we’re hearing about a lot of his personal life. He was such an amazing human being that I knew nothing about. I can’t recommend this wonderful documentary enough. I’m deeply saddened that I’ll never be able to meet one of my greatest heroes. The end of the doc seemed a little rushed as it was closing in on the 4 hour mark, and Paul Reubens wasn’t cooperating as much as the documentary crew wanted before he passed away. But I’m happy we got what we were able to since his passing.
I give this documentary 5 out of 5 stars – You can see what I’m currently watching by following me on Letterboxd @ roberthawk
