Last night we watched Ponyo (2008). I wanted to watch a movie that my entire family would enjoy together, and I remember this movie whenever I watch any Studio Ghibli film. They’re a japanese animation company that’s like the Disney in Japan. Making (mostly) family friendly content that people of all ages can enjoy and appreciate. And Ponyo is no exception! It’s quick, and cute. The story about a small fish who escapes the ocean and turns human because of magical powers then runs alongside her best friend who is also a human, and their adventures together. It’s super cute, and my 2-year-old son really enjoyed this movie before bedtime. If you have a family and want to watch something a little different than the content that’s popularized today, Ponyo is a great watch with everyone. Plus the cast of this movie for it’s english dub is fantastic: Noah Cyrus voices Ponyo (that’s Miley’s little sister), and Frankie Jonas voices Ponyo’s friend Sosuke (that’s the Jonas Brother’s youngest brother), Tina Fey voices the mom, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Betty White, and Liam Neeson are all in this movie and it’s wonderful. Check it out! Maybe you’ll find a new animation style you really enjoy and you’ll have a plethora of new movies to explore to watch with your family!
I give Ponyo 3 out of 5 stars – You can see what I’m currently watching by following me on Letterboxd @ roberthawk
