Last night I watched the movie IF with my son. My wife Dakota wasn’t in the room with me while we watched this movie. IF was written and directed by John Krasinski who is best known for playing Jim on the Office, and his movie series A Quiet Place. While Krasinski is in the movie periodically, he’s not the star of the film. IF stars Cailey Fleming (who was in the Walking Dead), Ryan Reynolds, Fiona Shaw, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr., Steve Carell as a big purple monster named Blue (who is very friendly by the way).
IF is the story about a girl who has sick parents and she goes to live with her grandma. While she’s there dealing with the situations of life, she stumbles upon IF’s or as we may know them as “Imaginary Friends.” These Imaginary Friends are looking for someone who will see them, so they can be matched together, otherwise, they go back to the group until they find a matching person. So the movie becomes like a match-making service for the IF’s. Overall, the movie has a LOT going on, and at times it CAN get a little confusing, but it’s a cute movie. The family can enjoy this one, but be aware there is a lot of what I’d call “light language” throughout the movie. Saying things like, “god” and “hell” and “damn,” and it is used quite a lot throughout the film. So the PG rating is very accurate. If you don’t want your kids exposed to these words, maybe pass on this film. Otherwise, it’s a fun watch, my kid liked Blue whenever he was on screen, and it was an enjoyable time.
I give this movie 3 out of 5 stars – You can see what I’m currently watching by following me on Letterboxd @ roberthawk
