Last night we watched Big Far Liar from 2002. It was directed by Shawn Levy (who also did Night at the Museum and Cheaper by the Dozen) and stars Frankie Muniz, Paul Giamatti, and Amanda Bynes. This was definitely a movie from the early 2000s! It’s totally coated in 2000s… EVERYTHING! From language spoken, to fashion worn, to tech used throughout the movie. It’s super solid though! Maybe I have a lot of nostalgia for this movie, or maybe it does actually hold up despite it using a ton of early 2000s tech. This movie rocks, and is super fun. Definitely geared for the tween to early teen audience, but I was the demographic when this came out, so I still love this movie.
Jason Shepherd is a 14-year-old compulsive liar who tries to get out of any situation with a lie, but when he finally DOES his homework, a Hollywood movie director gets ahold of his paper, and makes a full movie out of the script. That’s when Jason and his best friend Kaylee go to Hollywood to set the record straight and prove Jason isn’t lying! It’s a very classic “boy who cried wolf” tale, but it proves that lying won’t get you anywhere. For such a teen flick from the 2000s it’s got a great message behind it. Super fun acting, very funny situations, and clever visual effects.
I give this movie 3 ½ stars out of 5 – You can see what I’m currently watching by following me on Letterboxd @ roberthawk
