WATERTOWN, S.D. (KELO.com) –An explosive line of thunderstorms with embedded tornadoes raced across eastern South Dakota Thursday night, leaving behind destructive and widespread damage.
One of the hardest-hit communities was Castlewood, where a tornado hit the city around 6 p.m.
Aerial video shot by a drone shows dozens of homes with damage, trees snapped off or uprooted, and power lines down.
The City of Castlewood posted the following last night on its Facebook page:
If you have a place to stay outside of town, please go there immediately. There will be no power for a couple of days. If you do not have a place, Marc has opened the Community center for anyone in need. If you have an open room that you would like to offer, you can surely comment on this post. Thank you everyone!
Governor Kristi Noem also visited Castlewood.
Megan Mulford is with the National Weather Service in Aberdeen. She says they’re trying to determine how many tornadoes hit the region Thursday night.
