Last night my wife Dakota and I continued watching through “Hell-ish” superheroes by watching the 2004 movie HellBoy. Directed by one of the greatest directors ever, Guillermo del Toro, it stars Ron Perlman as Hellboy, along with a cast of characters that also includes Selma Blair, Jeffrey Tambor, Doug Jones, and John Hurt. About a demon (Hellboy) turned investigator who takes care of the worlds paranormal and demonic threats, sending them back to hell, until it all breaks loose. This is definitely a superhero movie from the 00s, competing with other movies like Sam Raimi’s Spider Man, the Fantastic 4, and Daredevil during those early super hero movie days, but this one RULES. It’s genuinely so great. While there are elements that COULD be considered over the top, or somewhat cheesy, this movie is a solid one. If you want a great super hero movie (anti-hero? demonic-hero?), check out Hellboy – it’s not Marvel, it’s not DC, it’s Dark Horse, and it wears that badge with honor.
I give this movie 4 stars out of 5 – You can see what I’m currently watching by following me on Letterboxd @ roberthawk
