Last night I showed my wife Dakota a really weird movie called John Dies at the End (2012). It’s based on the book, and this movie is really trippy. I’m telling you, it’s not for kids, or even some adults. This movie did not do well in the theaters, but when streaming was in its infancy, this movie did very well and quickly gained a cult following. I saw this movie when I was in high school, and I immediately fell in love with it. It’s really weird, and grotesque, yet really thought provoking and weird, in the most off-hand ways. Making you think about things you never want to think about, while trying to solve a mystery of where this substance came from, and people are dying from it because it’s a drug from another reality. I don’t really know any of the actors in this movie, except for Paul Giamatti, and the director of the movie directed all the Phantasm movies, so if you like those, you’ll dig this movie. It kind of reminds me of the existentialism you get when watching Fight Club, or Shaun of the Dead. I’d even say if you like the movie Dude, Where’s My Car? you’ll like this movie. Overall, this movie is weird, and definitely not for everyone, but I love it BECAUSE it’s weird and not for everyone..
I give this one 4 out of 5 stars – but know that it’s blinded by nostalgia and I can recognize it’s not THAT great of a movie – You can see what I’m currently watching by following me on Letterboxd @ roberthawk
