We watched Adam Sandler’s Disney movie Bedtime Stories from 2008. I remember seeing this movie in the theaters with my family. My mom was reluctant to show us an Adam Sandler film at such a young age, but the Disney title, and the director attached to the project must’ve changed her mind. And it’s very… Sandler, but for kids? The director of this movie is Adam Shankman who did movies like The Pacifier, Hairspray, and The Wedding Planner, so with these movies in mind, Bedtime Stories SHOULD be great! Especially with the cast? You’ve got Adam Sandler in the lead role Skeeter Bronson, Keri Russell, Guy Pearce, Russell Brand, Richard Griffiths, Jonathan Pryce, Courteney Cox, Lucy Lawless, Teresa Palmer, PLUS the usual gang of Sandler cameos throughout the movie.
The story is about Skeeter Bronson, who is working at his fathers hotel, as a shift in management is happening and Skeeter now has to compete with the other management to get the rights to his fathers hotel back. Meanwhile, he’s babysitting his niece and nephew and tells them bedtime stories, but whatever happens in the stories, happens to him in real life. It’s a pretty cool concept, with pretty great execution throughout the movie. The tone, the pacing, and the cast all work very well together. But there are aspects that are kind of over the top, or somewhat underwhelming with their payoff. It is a fine movie, and mostly safe for the kids to enjoy. There are two scenes in the movie where a full frontal shot of a woman in a bikini is shown, so if that’s not cool for the kids, I get it, but other than that, it’s fine.
Solid movie. It’s weird seeing an Adam Sandler “For Kidz!” movie through the Disney label, but it’s a good watch. I’d see it again. My kid was in the room for this movie and he really enjoyed the bedtime story segments of it.
I give this movie a 3 out of 5 stars – You can see what I’m currently watching by following me on Letterboxd @ roberthawk
