SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls law enforcement unveils the “Blue Envelope Program” – designed to help drivers with disabilities communicate during traffic stops. The initiative is intended to help autistic individuals and those with communication difficulties interact with law enforcement. Officer Kyle Johnson of the Sioux Falls Police Department says it takes some of the tension out of traffic stops. “Traffic stops require special communication from the beginning, and that’s the reason why this program is so important. Early understanding helps ensure safety for everyone involved.” The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s office is also participating in the program, which was initiated by the Center for Disabilities at USD.
The blue envelope is a blue document holder that can contain a driver’s license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance, along with optional information such as communication preferences and emergency contacts. Drivers may present the envelope during interactions with law enforcement to signal that additional communication support could be helpful.
