Last night my wife and I watched the Walt Disney Pictures movie Sky High (2005). We have been watching a bunch of “comfort movies” from our childhood, and this was a big one for us. It’s directed by Mike Mitchell who also directed Shrek 4, Alvin & The Chipmunks 3, Trolls, and the Lego Movie 2. Sky High stars Kurt Russell, Michael Angarano, Kelly Preston, Danielle Panabaker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and a slew of other great actors for awesome cameos throughout the movie. The story is about students starting their first year of high school… but they’re super heroes and need super hero training. Honestly, this movie ROCKS – it’s a fantastic and fun super hero movie! The colors are fantastic, the fashion is great, the story is solid, the acting is very Disney, but it’s wonderful. As a kid, this movie was my world, and as an adult who’s used to the Marvel Cinematic Universe being the standard, this movie is still FUN. If you want a dose of nostalgia and need to show the kids a family-friendly superhero movie, definitely re-discover Sky High.
I give this movie 3 ½ stars out of 5 – You can see what I’m currently watching by following me on Letterboxd @ roberthawk
